Paper
Paper is a substance made from wood pulp, rags, straw, or other fibrous material, usually in thin sheets, used to bear writing or printing, for wrapping things, etc.
Since 1910, Borden & Riley has been supplying a wide range of papers for the fine art, graphic design, calligraphy, watercolor, printing, drafting, sign writer, engineering/architectural and inkjet market. We currently carry a complete line of drawing, tracing, Bristol's, vellums, watercolor, and technical papers.
Sketching
Drawing & Sketching Papers are made for all purpose use. Drawing and sketching papers are generally very similar in surface texture with a fine tooth designed to accept all dry media. Drawing paper is usually heavier in weight, and suitable for more developed work and finished pieces. Sketch paper is generally lighter in weight and more economical for preliminary drawings and practice work.
Laser Art Plus
It has been tested on xerographic machines and laser printers. The whiteness and brightness will bring out any contrast with any drawing or laser printing.
Tracing
Tracing Paper is translucent paper designed to accept most drawing media. Use tracing paper for transfer tracing, fine line drawing, and overlays. Higher quality translucent paper that is good for engineering, architectural and technical drawing.
Charcoal
Charcoal Paper has a textured, toothy surface specifically designed to grab and hold the pigment of the charcoal stick. Charcoal paper is available in white or assorted colors. Charcoal can also be used on most other drawing papers, especially Pastel Paper, which is also features a highly textured surface and is available in a wide range of colors.
Pastel
Pastel Paper is thick, highly textured, toothy paper available in a variety of colors. The texture of the paper is designed to grab and hold the pigment from the pastel stick. Some pastel papers are treated with a special finely toothed acrylic primer designed to hold multiple layers of pigment. It is also possible to create your own sanded pastel paper using any heavyweight paper and Acrylic Ground for Pastel which can be tinted to the color of your choice with any acrylic paint.
Watercolour
Watercolor paper is produced in various weights from 90 lb. (light-weight) to 300 lb. (very heavy-weight). This refers to the weight of 144 sheets, not a single sheet. Heavy-weight papers will not need stretching or taping down when painting, no matter how wet you paint. Most watercolor papers are pre-treated with sizing when they are in the pulp stage. Sizing of paper is similar to gesso on canvas, as it makes the surface less absorbent. This can be an advantage or disadvantage depending on your preference. If you wish to take away some of the sizing, soak the paper in cool water then press between blotting paper or lightly dab the paper surface with paper towels to dry.
Layout
This is a heavyweight, bright white paper that is extremely smooth. It's ideal for working with tones and markers. It stands up to repeated erasing and tone work.
