Brushes

Brushes are used for applying ink or paint.  These are usually made by clamping the bristles to a handle with a ferrule.  Brushes can have many shapes.  Their names and styles may vary slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer, there are certain consistencies.  Traditionally, short handled brushes are for watercolor or ink painting while the long handled brushes are for oil or acrylic paint.

Camel

A "camel" brush is not made of camel hair.  It is a generic term for soft-haired brushes that are made of various inexpensive hairs such as pony, bear, sheep, and lesser grades of squirrel mixed together and supposedly named after the man who originated it.  Camel hair brushes received their name from "Mr. Camel", who invented them.

 

Sable

A sable-hair brush (also known as red sable or sable hair brush) is a fine artists' brush.  The hair is obtained from the tail of the kolinsky (Mustela sibirica), a species of weasel rather than an actual sable.  It is pale red in colour with darker tips.  Those who use the sable brush claim it has superior strength, slenderness, and resiliency when compared with other sable brushes.

 

Synthetic

A synthetic brush is a paint brush with filaments that are made from a non-absorbent plastic material such as polyester or nylon, rather than animal hair.  Synthetic brushes are usually used for latex paint.  In recent years, brushes made of synthetic hair filaments have become generally accepted as an excellent alternative to natural hair

 

Bristle

A bristle brush is a brush that is made with the short stiff hairs of an animal or plant.
